Ladies, Ladies ROCK YOUR RED PUMPS! Gentlemen, ROCK YOUR RED TIES!
Hello lovely people! Guess what? I’m back blogging ( I know, I know, I claim that I’m going to start posting on a regular basis all the time, but I promise, this time is different, lol)…I digress.
Today’s post is dedicated to my awesome organization, The Red Pump Project and our annual “Rock The Red Pump” Campaign. March 10th is National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, and we at Red Pump always commemorate this day; after all, this is the core of what we do–raise awareness about the impact of HIV/AIDS on women and girls. We promote HIV prevention through education, and open dialogue about the issues that surround sexual and reproductive health.
So last month, the mister and I decided to celebrate Valentine’s Day a bit differently. Instead of making it all about us, we decided to volunteer our resources to travel to DC and do the very first Red Pump DC photo shoot, organized by my lovely partner in crime, Red Pump Coordinator Brittani Menina. I absolutely love the pics he captured of me and the girls…and since I love his work, I wanted to use his pic as my official #RockTheRedPump photo to commemorate the day.
I’m blessed to be involved with a man who supports and gives back, by any means necessary and is always willing to help. This was one of the best date weekends ever! Not only did I get the chance to spend quality time with my hun, but I was able to contribute to a cause I believe in. What more could you ask for!
I’m Rock My Red Pumps Proudly, today and everyday.
National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NWGHAAD) is on March 10. Are you ready to support and raise awareness? If so, join us for the 5th Annual Rock The Red Pump Campaign and make your voice heard! For more information, http://www.redpump.org.
I am proud to say that I have been a Red Pump Ambassador since the movement began (click here for some history on The Red Pump Project). We work online and on the ground promoting awareness and education about HIV/AIDS and the issues surrounding it, particularly as it is applicable to women and girls. The red shoe is a symbol of empowerment and strength as we fight the AIDS epidemic with knowledge. I’m often asked why I ROCK THE RED PUMP…check out the stats below, and the reason should be crystal clear:
Leading cause of death for Black women (including African American women) aged 25–34 years.
3rd leading cause of death for Black women aged 35–44 years
4th leading cause of death for Black women aged 45–54 years
4th leading cause of death for Latina women aged 35–44 years
The only diseases causing more deaths of women are cancer and heart disease
The rate of AIDS diagnosis for Black women was approximately 23 times the rate for white women and 4 times the rate for Latina women
In 2006, teen girls represented 39% of AIDS cases reported among 13–19 year-olds. Black teens represented 69% of cases reported among 13–19 year-olds; Latino teens represented 19%.

I certainly have my personal hit list–the qualities and characteristics that I find most alluring about the opposite sex–but as I head into the third year of planning for my World AIDS Day event, I must say, out of everything, I find awareness mad sexy. Awareness about education, awareness about social issues awareness about what is going on in the world…not just sports and music (although, per a recent twitter conversation, you need to be into music and sports for me to find you attractive, lol). However, ultimately, I find a man who is well versed about how to keep himself safe as well as those around him absolutely beautiful. Men who aren’t afraid of abstinence and are proud to wait for the right one. Men who aren’t afraid to say, no, we can’t do this without a condom. Men who will go with you to get that all important HIV test. Men who understand that awareness, especially when it comes to reproductive and sexual health is always a top priority and not an afterthought. Men who know how to lead in all aspects of their lives: spiritually, physically and mentally.
We need our men to support us. Join me on December 1st as we celebrate life and bring some awareness and education about HIV/AIDS in our community. This fight is still on…pretending it doesn’t exist will not make it go away. I hope to see every man in my life there, rocking a red tie in support:-)
